~ RED SQUARE ~

Red - beautiful
in old Russian
not communist
as west still thinks
Kremlin churches
Arm'ry glitter
Tretiakov art
across the ages
Moscow wintry
colorful walls
avenues and squares
monolithic
buildings emerge
in birch and pine

And Lenin's tomb
no more line-ups
or honor guard
no more parades
Politburo
Moscow renewed
eagles aloft
you changed again
reclaim hist'ry
red stars on roofs
not in power
struggling with new
economy
your pride renewed

spirit will stand
in winter night
the winds of change
will not bend you
you have survived
Tatars and Turks
Napoleon, Nazis
in river bend
sprawling city
you embody
contradictions
hurts and triumphs
stolen moments
in a child's smile

your crows aren't black
they're grey and black
you are two worlds,
you don't want east
yet you're not west
command expanse
past range and steppe
Arctic - Altai
Baltic - Bering
can you hold all
those nations fast
Orth'dox, Muslim
in the shadow
of twisted spires
