~ SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA ~
destroyed upon re-entry, 1 February 2003

Remember April '81...
Would those tiles hold up in the heat
Of Columbia's maiden return?
Today streaking east Texas skies
Dean of flights at one-thirty-three
Seven astronauts poets all
Feet on the ground, eyes in the stars
 Engineers serving all mankind
Two women, Indian, Israeli...
They carry on our hopes and dreams
Beyond our simple daily fears,
Beyond war and irrational.
The tapestry of humankind
Rests on those who dare to reach out.
America! Look at the world
Its hopes and dreams well beyond yours.
